Internships Can Offer Unexpected Benefits Aside From Expected Job Duties

Internships can truly be a door opener for young adults looking to gain hands-on experience in their career of interest while still studying in school. All of the strategists at Media Volery have developed some integral skills that have contributed to their success, from an internship. We know first-hand that this exposure can help you advance in your career.

Opportunities to Learn About Client and Business Management

Not only does an internship familiarize you with the skills needed to excel in your field of choice, but there’s the potential to learn about other aspects of the work. For instance, while participating in internal and external meetings, interns are able to learn some of the nuances of relationship building and business management. At Media Volery, we believe that internships provide young professionals with an opportunity to develop soft skills in addition to learning how to execute.

Working an internship at an agency is it’s own unique experience because you get to work with a variety of clients and understand how to navigate a range of personalities and expectations. It also forces you to learn more about other industries and verticals that you may not have expected to become knowledgable in. You never know when this can be beneficial down the line.

Gain More Experience with Collaborating on Projects in “the Real World”

We were fortunate enough to introduce two new interns to the Media Volery team during the Spring 2021 semester from CUNY The City College of New York. These interns majored in advertising & public relations, and both are looking to expound upon different skill sets in this field. They have interfaced with clients, contributed to internal meetings, and executed projects according to established timelines.

When it comes to the valuable experience gained while working at an internship, Tia Tyrell, one of our Spring 2021 interns has shared, “I collaborate frequently with digital strategists. This internship has challenged me to be open-minded and to think in a more solutions-oriented way.”

As we know, many of us have collaborated together with classmates for school projects, but collaborating with a team to put together the pieces of a project for a client can bring a deeper sense of accomplishment. Through this action, you can see how the skills you’ve learned in school prepare you for teamwork.

As with all new experiences, there’s always a learning curve. There are some things you simply can’t learn in a classroom. Hailey Bernhard, another Spring 2021 intern shared that, “accommodating the different expectations of different clients is a huge part of the job that is not really covered in the skills and knowledge you’re taught in classes.” It’s these unexpected challenges that create real value for students who are eager to get into the workforce. Hailey shares some insights that she gained while at Media Volery in her blog post, Interning at Media Volery: 3 Things I’ve Learned Working in an Agency.

Since our agency work encompasses utilizing a range of skills, our interns are able to get an experience that doesn’t keep them in a silo and allows them to collaborate with all members of the team. All Media Volery, our internships are paid and can be used towards course credit, we’re happy to be a resource and provide opportunities for college students as we once were.

Media Volery’s summer 2021 internships have already been filled, but look out later this summer for information about our fall internships.
